Our topic for June was Hydrangeas 101 – Back to basics.
Lynda Pollock reported the following: Monday night’s meeting was wonderful. Jennifer Petritz shared so much knowledge about hydrangeas. Fabulous photos of new varieties and past favorites and great information on care. Learned remontant (reblooming) varieties need current blooms removed to encourage the reblooming in the fall. Hard to do but hopefully worth it. Next American Hydrangea Society meeting is In October. Always great speakers and wonderful raffle plants! Check out www.americanhydrangeasociety.org
Carol Hassell shared: Hydrangea species from macrophylla to arborescens, paniculata and quercifolia took center stage at the recent GCMGA June meeting. Jennifer Petritz, president of the American Hydrangea Society, showcased beautiful photos and talked about varieties from some of the most well known (such as Annabelle, H. arborescens) to others perhaps not as familiar (Harmony, a quercifolia variety also known as Sheep’s Head). Jennifer also touched on proper pruning and timing for this task (NOW for any type, given the flush of new growth resulting from plentiful recent rains), along with her methods of installing new plants and overall garden care especially for hydrangeas.
